Bosuns Hut floor update
Published 17:22 on 8 Mar 2026
It had become apparent that the concrete floor surface inside the Bosuns Hut was starting to fail prematurely, with visible dusting and erosion. To address this issue, the original contractor was invited back to the site to discuss potential solutions.
After some discussion, the Contractor agreed - at no cost to the Club - to initially take core samples from the concrete slab to assess its overall integrity. The laboratory results confirmed that, aside from the top surface, the rest of the concrete was up to standard. Then having had confirmation of a positive test result, to agree a solution for the surface layer problem. We have now agreed for the Contractor, again at their expense, to hire a specialist company. Their task will be to grind off the faulty top layer of the concrete floor and apply a new, high-build epoxy resin coating. This epoxy not only incorporates colour within the mixture - eliminating the need for future repainting - but also provides a nonslip finish for added safety for when it gets wet.
Although this is causing some disruption to the Club, it will result in a brand new, F1-style garage floor finish, that is significantly better than the existing painted concrete and will offer a longer service life.
A special thank-you to the Wednesday Club, who have emptied the building in readiness for the work. This included removing all the workshop benches they had previously spent many hours installing, which will then need to be re-installing once the work is complete.
Timeline
The contractor is scheduled to begin work on 11 March, with the project expected to take approximately ten days. The Bosuns Hut will be empty and closed to members during the works. Please be mindful that workers will be present on site throughout this period.
During the repairs, the powerboats and the tractor will be temporarily relocated to their previous storage location. All four powerboats, along with the tractor and flags, will be securely housed in the two old boatsheds. As before, these boatsheds will be secured with a bar across the door, the intruder alarm will be active, and the tractor will be chained to the ground anchor for enhanced security.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding while these essential improvements are carried out.
