Powerboat training FAQs
I want to do safety boat duty, what training do I need to have completed?
To be a Safety Boat Assistant you do not need to have done any training! The only requirement is that youre fit, able and willing. We recommend you complete at least one duty as safety boat assistant before doing powerboat training.
To be a Safety Boat Driver you need to meet the clubs minimum requirements. If youre new to powerboating then you need to successfully complete the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course.
We recommend that safety boat drivers complete additional safety boat training, and it helps if you are an experienced sailor too.
What is the minimum age for doing powerboat courses?
The minimum age at Hunts SC for doing RYA Powerboat Level 2 is 14. We offer powerboat training to youngsters who are on the instructor training pathway. Having completed the course under 16s must be supervised by a competent adult. Typically this will be a dinghy instructor whilst assisting on a training course.
The minimum age for undertaking safety boat training and safety boat duties is 16.
Ive been doing safety duty for years, why do I now need Powerboat Level 2?
For now, the minimum requirements have not changed; that is you must either hold an RYA Powerboat Level 2 (PB2) qualification or have completed the club training course (Acquaint). However the club training course has been retired and in the future only PB2 will be recognised. We encourage those who have previously done the club training course to upgrade to PB2; for experienced powerboat helms this can be done via a direct assessment.
Ive recently joined and have powerboat experience, can I do safety boat duties?
If you have RYA Powerboat Level 2 acquired at a different club or centre we will recognise that as sufficient. However before doing your first duty wed like to give you a brief induction to introduce you to our boats and equipment. Please email training@huntssc.org to arrange.
If you do not have an RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate you will need to successfully complete the course or a direct assessment.
