Duty roster

Hunts Sailing Club is a volunteer-run organization, and we ask all members to contribute by completing a a duty each year (2 for family membership). This not only helps in running club activities but also provides a fantastic opportunity to engage with the club and connect with other members.

We utilise the duty rota system available in the Member Portal on our website. To access it, please log in to the portal; you will find the duty roster in the right-hand menu.

In April, we will assign duties to any members who have not yet signed up. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Commodore Tom Lachlan-Cope or Sailing Secretary John Coppenhall.

Summary of each duty

Race Officer

This duty calls for an experienced club racer who can set a course, run the start and finish sequence with flag and sound signals, calculate results and has some knowledge of the racing rules.

  • Sundays: 10am-5pm/dusk to allow for opening up/changing/launching/course laying prior to 1st race at 11am.

Assistant Race Officer

You will help the Race Officer with starting and finishing races, recording lap times and calculating results. A great way to learn how to be a Race Officer.

  • Sundays: 10am-5pm/dusk to allow for opening up/changing/launching/course laying prior to 11am 1st race.

Safety Boat Driver

This duty involves providing safety cover for racing (Sundays) or general sailing (Saturdays). The safety boat driver is a competant, experienced person who will launch, recover and operate the powerboat safely, perform all safety and equipment checks, know how to safely recover persons from the water and deal with capsized dinghies.

You may share driving with the safety boat assistant if they are appropriately qualified (and we encourage you to use the time on the water to practice boat handling skills), however the safety boat driver remains responsible for dealing with incidents as they arise.

Minimum qualifications for this duty are RYA Powerboat Level 2 or the old club safety boat course (Acquaint); if you do not have Powerboat Level 2 you should endeavour to upgrade at your earliest convenience. We additionally encourage safety boat drivers to undertake the additional half day safety boat training run by the club or RYA Safety Boat course. See the powerboat training page for more info.

  • Saturdays: 12pm-4pm to allow for open up/change/boat launch etc. before sailing officially starts at 1pm.
  • Sunday: 10am-5pm/dusk to allow for opening up/changing/launching/course laying prior to 11am 1st race.

Safety Boat Assistant

You will work with the Safety Boat driver to recover or right capsized dinghies or assist sailors in difficulty. You do not need to be able to drive the safety boat although it is a good chance to see what's involved. On Sundays you'll be helping lay the course for the racing too.

You should be dressed to enter the water if need be (although this is rare - but you're likely to get splashed, so sailing kit is advised!) and should be fit and capable of helping possibly injured persons from the water into the safety boat.

  • Saturdays: 12pm-4pm to allow for open up/change/boat launch etc. before sailing officially starts at 1pm.
  • Sunday: 10am-5pm/dusk to allow for opening up/changing/launching/course laying prior to 11am 1st race.

Galley

Serving drinks, sweets, cakes and snacks to hungry sailors. On Sundays you'll also be preparing filled rolls for lunches, and in the winter baking jacket potatoes. The duty includes loading and emptying the dishwasher, cleaning the kitchen at the end of the day and wiping down the tables. Instructions are in the galley.

  • Saturdays: 12pm-4pm, serving drinks and snacks only.
    1 person is rostered.
  • Sundays: 10am-5pm/dusk to allow for opening up and preparing food for lunch (about 12pm) and tea (about 2pm).
    2 people are rostered.
