Introducing our Habitat Management Group

Published 17:03 on 29 Jan 2024

We now have a core Habitat Team in place;  Rachel Jones, Sally Farquharson, Sonia Humby and Veronica Latham. They have developed a plan, engaged with Natural Environment experts, and have started implementing the improvements.

As well as wanting to improve the ecology of the area, we have an obligation from the Bosun's Hut planning permission to create a net gain in the biodiversity on the site. We can do this by either creating or enhancing the existing habitats. Going forward, any work we do now can be added to our biodiversity net gain score for any upcoming planning applications (e.g. the changing rooms).

However, it's not just about ticking planning boxes. Having a sailing venue which looks well managed and is a great place to spend time, not only helps retain members, but also attracts new members and open meeting visitors. As we now own the land, we are the custodians and therefore have a responsibility to maintain and enhance the area for future generations of sailors as well as the environment.

The theme last year for the site was 'the big clean up', this year (and ongoing) is the 'improved management of the site's natural habitat'.

If you want to know more or join in, please speak with any of the Habitat Team.
